As for brakes, my almost new 56
Buick did not have as good brakes as my first 56 Tbird I bought in 1960. The problem with Tbird brakes is that the brake industry no longer supports the drum brake cars with quality friction materials. Cost and ignorance also contribute to poor brakes because some people still think bonded linings are OK. They are not OK, they are only cheap, don't use them. If your linings come in a box they are most likely of poor quality because it is illegal to manufacture and sell new brake linings made from asbestos.
The only way I have found to get quality brakes for a Tbird, or a 57 Ford is to take the shoes and drums to a commercial friction shop that specializes in rebuilding
brakes and clutches for big Semi tractor trailer trucks and have the drums turned and fit the new
linings they will rivet onto your old shoes. You cannot get this kind of quality at Auto Zone. There are commercial brake and clutch shops in all major cites, you just have to find them. I use
American Power Brake & Clutch (214-350-5611) in Dallas Texas. They have
tons of asbestos friction material they have stock piled from the time when they could get it. I would expect other friction shops across the country have done the same thing.
A common problem with drum brakes is that the installer does not know the difference between the primary and secondary linings and how to properly install them. I often
find both primary linings on one side of the car and both secondary linings on the other side as well as the primary and secondary linings switched. Remember, the short shoe (primary) goes to the front and the long shoe (secondary) goes to the rear. This applies to all four wheels.
As for the power brakes on Tbirds, they do not make for better brakes. Power brakes only make for easier to use brakes. It takes less peddle force to use brakes with
power brakes. Power brakes are most appreciated by people who don't have the strength to push the firewall out when standing on the break peddle with both feet. But
the Tbird power brake unit is a very desirable accessory for our Tbirds.
